Position Summary
Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer and Head of Corporate Strategy. The individual in this position will work closely with R&D organization and senior leadership team to create and secure protection for the intellectual property of a growing biotech company.

  • Identify, procure and defend intellectual property worldwide including evaluating inventions, conducting prior art searches, preparing and prosecuting patent applications.
  • Supervise outside counsel in the preparation and prosecution of patent applications.
  • Conduct freedom-to-operate analyses; monitor and analyze third-party intellectual property.
  • Counsel and educate scientists and management regarding IP issues and strategies.
  • Support business development and management on licensing opportunities and IP-related transactional work.
  • Review nondisclosure, research, material transfer and service agreements involving the use, transfer, or ownership of intellectual property.
  • Lead implementation of IP policies, guidelines and objectives.
  • Provide other legal advice and services as may be required from time to time in a growing biotech company.


  • 10+ years of patent law experience, including drafting and prosecuting nucleic acid therapeutics or gene therapies.
  • MS or Ph.D. in biochemistry, molecular biology or organic chemistry.
  • J.D. from an accredited U.S. law school with admission to at least one state bar.
  • Registered before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.
  • Law firm and/or pharmaceutical/biotech company experience.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to quickly communicate complex issues clearly and succinctly.
  • Strong organizational skills, including careful attention to detail and ability to handle and prioritize multiple assignments and maintain strict deadlines through effective time management.
